DIY Organic Mosquito Repellants

DIY Organic Mosquito Repellants

If there’s one bad thing that those warm days of summer can bring, it’s mosquitoes. There’s nothing worse than having your barbecue or camp out ruined by a hungry horde of those blood-sucking monsters.

But if you’ve ever done any research on the safety of chemical bug repellents, you’ve likely discovered that most repellents contain DEET, which many other countries have banned because they believe it is toxic.

What’s a health-conscious parent or person to do? Do it yourself!

While there are a few healthy DEET-free choices out there in mosquito repellents, such as Yellowbird and Babyganics, they can be expensive for the amount you’re getting. For a little more money invested, you could have a few ingredients that can not only make you many, many batches of safe, organic mosquito repellent, but those ingredients can also be used for many practical and health-boosting purposes.

Essential oils can be very effective in repelling bugs of all types, including mosquitoes. There are many oils that bugs dislike, but the most common and most effective are Lavender, Peppermint, Arborvitae, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Thyme, Clove, Sage, Rosemary, and Cinnamon.

Not only are DIY essential oil sprays very effective against a variety of bothersome bugs, but they can often work better than their toxic counterparts, the DEET-filled chemical sprays.

Below are a few suggestions and DIY recipes. Feel free to experiment, and figure out what works for you.

Budget Friendly Peppermint Bug-Off Spray

In a glass trigger-spray bottle, put 20 drops of peppermint essential oil, then top off with plain water, leaving at least an inch or so of space at the top to allow for shaking. Shake the bottle well each time you apply to re-mix (re-shaking the bottle a little bit after every few sprays).

This is the lowest-cost essential oil mosquito repellent, as it only contains 20 drops of one inexpensive oil, and is safe to spray all over your body and clothes (keep away from the eyes and other orifices). This is great when you need to apply a lot of it to a large group of people, or spray it around the campsite.

Roll-On Mosquito Repellent

This would be easier to carry with you on the go, although it won’t go nearly as far as the spray. In a 10 ml glass roller ball bottle, put in 20 drops of your favorite bug-repelling essential oils (I’d include peppermint and arborvitae for sure, plus any you like the scent of), then top off with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil. Be sure to leave a little room at the top for mixing. Close up the bottle and roll between your hands for one minute to mix. Because the essential oils are mixed with carrier oil and not water, you only need to mix it once.

You could also mix the same blend in larger amounts to fill a small 2 ounce pump-spray bottle, which will fit well into a purse.

With a small investment of time and money, you’ll have everything you need to keep those nasty mosquitoes at bay, and stay healthy while you do it!
